What are they and how do they work

TableTop robots consist of a base onto wich a 2 or 3-axis gantry or cantilever system is mounted.

The base is an extremely rigid rectangular extruded aluminum frame that contains the axis control unit. The axis system’s configuration varies depending on the number of axes and their mounting arrangement.

All axes are equipped with encoders, ball screw mechanisms and feedback motors.

Main features

  • High precision and repeatability
  • Excellent rigidity
  • Compactness
  • Reliability

The selection of a tabletop robot should consider the following characteristics:

Payload(kg): the maximum weight of the objects to be manipulated;

Stroke (mm); the length or distance that each axis must cover

to move the object along the established trajectory;

Speed (mm/sec): the maximum speed at which the robot can operate, depending on the indicated payload;

Precision: the accuracy with which the robot can operate based on the applied payload and operational speed.

Working area

The workspace of tabletop robots is a rectangle or a parallelepiped on whether the chosen system is 2 or 3 axes.

Configurations

Tabletop robots come in essentially 2 configurations:

Gantry configuration: the Y-axis is fixed to two uprights

This configuration is suitable when the loads are unbalanced or cantilever on the slide and when the Z-axis is heavily loaded

2-axis overhead crane robot

3 axis overhead crane robot

Cantilevered configuration: with its open structure it allows for work on bulky and irregularly shaped pieces.

2-axis cantilever robot

3-axis cantilever robot

Application’s fields

Tabletop robots can be a standalone system or complement assembly lines to complete operations or make changes to a limited number of pieces. They are commonly used for pick&place tasks, assembly of electronic boards and printed circuits, quality control, screw insertion and tightening, fluid dispensing and welding…

IAI

IAI tabletop robots are designed to meet the needs of customers looking for a “plug&play” product, meaning ready to use.

The workspace ranges from 200X200mm to 500X500mm for the X-Y axes, with a possible Z-axis range of 100 to 150mm.

It is also possible to apply a combined vertical axis with an AR rotator in both versions.

Motorization can be either 24V stepper or 230V servo and programming can be done via PC or teach pendant.
